He stood up to the McCarthy witch hunt (which John Wayne was an advocate) and helped end the ban of writers who had been banished to the UK and forced to write Z Cars. The great Trumbo (Spartacus) being one.

He was in the Broadway production of One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest in the 1960's and owned the film rights.
Couldn't get it made as a film & gave the rights to his son Michael. By the time he got it made Kirk was too old so Jack Nicholson got the part.

Re: Happy 100th Birthday Kirk Douglas
For him and his Mrs to be married for 60 years is the big achievement, especially in Hollywood and she is 97!!

Spartacus and The Vikings for me although I did love Tough Guys which he did with Burt Lancaster.

Re: Happy 100th Birthday Kirk Douglas
The Vikings was also my favourite but he made many greats. Excellent actor and fantastic innings, many happy returns.

Played Vincent Van Gogh in Lust For Life
After a screening John Wayne came up to him and said 'Kirk , how can you play a part like that. There are only a few of us left that can play tough guy parts not weak queers like that'

Kirk is still kicking on while the big homo Marion Morrison is long gone.
Happy Birthday, Kirk SON

Zsa Zsa Gabor will be 100 in less than two months but she only has one leg, which is one more than the Italian Zaza.

Re: Happy 100th Birthday Kirk Douglas
Fuck me! 2016 has been the year of big guns passing away, and here comes Kirk to kick them all in the cobblers.

The last survivor of the latter golden age of Hollywood.

I'll big up a lesser known gem......"The Fury" A bit of a cult classic.

Also, just reading about him, I have learnt that he starred in a Broadway play in 1963, bought the story, later gave it to his son Michael, who turned it into an oscar winning movie, and possibly my favourite of them all......"One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest."

Respect for him coming out of my earholes.

Happy Birthday, Sir Kirk.

Neil

Recognise those memories fondly

More to the point Nagel, the bloke spent his life roaring up all sorts of prized strumpets - it's a bloody miracle that he did not keel over years ago, many lives in one there for sure and fair play to him

Re: Happy 100th Birthday Kirk Douglas
Ace in the Hole just about my favourite.
Even as an old man and all those years in Hollywood, he still has the hardness of a man who dragged himself out of the gutter.

Re: Happy 100th Birthday Kirk Douglas
Well done Kirk. For blokes of my generation he's one of those old Sunday afternoon film stars, dinner, Big Match then Kirk Douglas, Burt Lancaster, Yul Brynner, Tony Curtis et al.
